The Dictionary Project
Through collaborative efforts of the three Rotary Clubs in Caldwell County, every third grader in the Caldwell county School system gets a personal dictionary to supplement their learning resources. The Rotary Club of Caldwell county, the Rotary Club of Granite Falls and the Rotary Club of Lenoir work together to purchase and give out dictionaries. Rotarians make visits to the classrooms and explain the Four-Way Test, which is printed on the bookplate for each book. The Four-Way test was adopted by Rotary in 1943. The message is known and followed by all Rotarians: "Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?" Third graders and teachers are very happy to receive their dictionaries. This is just one of the many efforts of Rotary for literacy in Caldwell County.
